Changes in go-to-market routes driven by e-commerce and smart devices present business leaders in the FMCG industry with new challenges. They face pressure to adapt their businesses to respond quickly to rapidly changing consumer needs whilst at the same time grow profit margins. Addressing evolving consumer needs requires new approaches, fast product development, and potentially different skill sets within the organization.  

Legacy and well-known brands like Nike and Dollar Shave Club (part of Unilever) are investing heavily in direct-to-consumer (DTC) channels and reporting significant growth in sales. However, DTC means massive change for businesses in all functional areas.  In fact, some of the world’s best-known brands today are cutting out the entire supply chain; asset-free giants like Uber, Netflix and AirBnB.

Getting closer to the consumer will have a big impact on product development, sales and marketing. Manufacturing and supply chain need increased flexibility, smaller batch sizes, faster response times…all impacting costs.  Organizational changes will require strong leadership: talent management, roles and responsibilities, mergers and acquisitions, effective decision making, motivating and engaging the workforce, global thinking and local execution.

Leadership must focus on integrating all functions of the business into a structured process to effectively anticipate and respond to new market segments and needs.
